8000 mile service disappointment

Got back earlier from taking my bike for its 1 year/8000 mile service.    I knew the chain needed adjusting, but thought I might as well leave it to them, but decided to check if they had done it when I got back home.

The chain had been adjusted, but the wheel was out of alignment, and worse the locknuts on the adjusters were halfway down the threads and not in contact with the adjustment nuts.  Certainly not locking anything, and all set to vibrate off completely at some point.

Very disappointing.   I've emailed them and told them that this is not good enough and that they won't be getting my custom in future.

Fred, I've been impressed with the new V-Strom 1000 since BIKE magazine rode one from their office in Peterborough back to the factory in Japan. A proper 'road test' that was!

Nasty things solenoids Fred. Hope you recovered quickly and are now in good health.

I'm sorry to hear that Fred. I think you should at least name Honda garage that done poor quality service so other forum members are aware where not to take their bike.

Out of interest, how much did they charge you for 8k service? I've been quoted at £150 which is bit too much for oil change.

what a load of "tankers". I must be the only one who is very pleased with my dealers Colwyn Bay,although a 55 mile ride to get there.

I had my speedo head changed under warranty -the service manager Trevor reckoned a 90 minute job ,I was wondering what test bike to try and then the mechanic said -it's all done. 20 minutes! the free coffee wasn't even cold!

so sorry to hear about the others but SOME Honda dealers deserve praise!

Always worth travelling a bit further to support a dealer that gives good service

Fred, I've used Sutton Honda at Tamworth over the past 3 years for service of my Crosstourer and then the NC. I've never had an issue and they're nice people too. Assuming you keep a Honda

Hi Len,

Yes - they seem good at ticking the inspection sheets to says they have done everything - not so good at actually doing it!   They have now rung me back, very apologetic and saying that they have never had anything like that happen before and will be investigating, and would give me a discount on the next service.   Not sure I would want to take them up on that - the bike will be out of warranty so will probably do it myself.

Regarding your sub-harness, etc, I think the latest person to go into this in some detail with some input from me and others was Alan Sykes (sykospain).  He discovered that there are different variants of the sub-harness cable, I think he initially ended up with one with only one connector which isn't massively useful.  If you PM him and ask him nicely he might be able to give you the latest info he found out regarding part numbers for the required bits.

Anyway, basically you need the relay and fuse kit, with these fitting in the empty accessories relay and fuse positions inside the fuse box which lives next to the battery behind the access panel in the frunk.  This has clips top and bottom which you need to squeeze to remove the lid - a lot of people seem to have problems with getting this off - they are probably not squeezing hard enough!  It would be very easy to fit this yourself.   This just makes the accessories wiring live.  To connect up Honda accessories you then also need a sub-harness.

The sub-harness is just a cable which extends the wiring loom of the bike by adding one or more accessories sockets which use Hitachi type connectors.  These are readily available should you want to connect up non-Honda accessories to the sub-harness.  The sub-harness has a 6 way connector at the bike end which plugs into a matching connector on the bike's main wiring loom which amongst other things provides a connection to the ignition switched 12V supply provided by the relay and fuse described earlier.

On the 750X the connector to plug the sub-harness into is hidden away in a little recess moulded into the bottom of the frunk at the left back corner.  You can only get at this by taking off the side panel, and I found mine was trapped into place by the main loom running right under the recess.  You have to wrestle with the loom a bit to make space to pull the connector out of its recess.   The official instructions for fitting the sub-harness instruct you to tie it in a position under the side panel, which of course means that should you want to add another accessory to a spare sub-harness connector in future you have to have the panel off again.

Some people have found that if you ignore the Honda instructions, then the end of the sub-harness with the accessory connectors on it can be pushed though a gap so that they are accessible inside the battery compartment near the fuse box which is much more convenient.  In my case I actually made an extension cable to the connection from the main loom so that I could put the 6 way connector inside the front fairing cavity and plug the sub-harness in there.

Hope that helps,

Fred

Good to know - thanks.

Funnily enough the CrossRunner I had before the NC, and which I got from the BMW dealer in Wolverhampton, had been supplied to the first owner by Tamworth Honda and serviced there.   Just a bit far for me from where I live near Loughborough.

I may try Bob Minion in Derby next time I want anything doing, though I am getting a bit restless regarding the bike.  Nothing wrong with the NC, and I've invested quite a bit in add-ons and enhancements,  but I kind of fancy a change, even though I'm reluctant to give up the DCT.  Been looking at the V-Strom 1000 which is very well equipped and very good value second hand, and seems to get good reviews.

I think I'll go and sit on a few candidates at the NEC show next week!

I think there is a wider issue here i.e. "bit changers" and not proper engineers in all aspects of life, motorcycle dealers are just one.  Ask yourself when was the last time you epmloyed or paid for a job done by a proper engineer and a subject matter expert?

Great thing about Dobles new workshop is there is a large MOT viewing window and you can watch them work. It might encourage a bit of care.

I have used Sutton Honda in Bromsgrove for the past 3 years and have had great service. I have always checked things afterwards to find all in order and everything done.

I agree. Basically there are just not enough competent/intelligent/well trained people around to service our technology dependent society.  In other countries like Germany and France "engineer" is a meaningful title for well qualified people who are held in high esteem.  Here every grease monkey who has had a bit of basic training on how to maintain some piece of equipment is given the title engineer.

I will wait for the results of their promised investigation into this before judging whether they deserve to be named and shamed!

Fred

PS: To answer your question, the service cost £150.

Just to say I'm very happy with the Honda Dealer I use (Torbay Motorcycles in Newton Abbott) good service and sensibly priced old school solus Honda dealer. I believe a couple of others on here use them too.

That's very disappointing, will be interested to hear how they try to recover your confidence...or not

in my game -Aga and Rayburn cookers - they have tried to legislate and make sure that the guys (and a few girls) get qualifications.Trouble is there is a huge industry of giving " courses" and bits of paper - for large fees. These are ofcourse approved of by our political correct leaders - after all any degree or certificate shows what a good job their "education policy" is - and insurance firms who can escape payouts if the "certs" are in order.

Trouble is its all "boll*cks" and the worst jobs tend to be done by the least capable people -but they have a piece of paper!

In the "old days" you became a mechanic or heating "engineer" because you wanted that sort of work - now with so few jobs ,they  take what they can get.

So we get "fitters" who can change a part - the computer diagnosed it was broken, innit? But have no idea on really what the part does, or why it should fail. And don't forget that the employer cannot be too selective - he is obliged to take on unsuitable people to be "correct"

Its been LOVELY recently when ex services chaps have come for bits -their attitude is " don't tell me it can't be done, we will FIX it" not "Oh sorry that parts' not made any more-so you can only scrap it!

so maybe it's not all the dealers fault -maybe he is just part of a bigger problem.

Whodunnit Fred?

Was it where you bought the bike from or where you had the Solenoid recall done? ;)

I had the chain adjusters come loose many years ago on a 250cc bike

As I accelerated hard the bike went into an almost terminal Tank Slapper

Not good.
