Lost A Key

Ok, so I've lost a key. I either left it in the bike or dropped it just outside the office door. Either way someone picked it up and walked off with it.

So, a couple of questions

Can a key be 'forgotten' and do I have to go to the dealer to do so? I'd like to forget the lost one ASAP rather than have my bike be vulnerable.

I presume they can cut and add a new key to replace the old one, correct? Am I right in thinking it's £70 for a new key to be cut and programmed???

I think there is a fairly simple process, perhaps it was embee who described it, whereby you can program a new key to your ECU, which I assume means that some ID data from the ECU is lodged into the HISS chip in the key. However, I am not sure if there is a unique ID for each key which goes the other way and is remembered by the ECU and can therefore later be wiped.  If not, as you say the bike will be vulnerable.  Hopefully this is not the case, and there is a unique ID for each key that a dealer can wipe from the ECU.   This link would suggest that keys do have codes which are held in the ECU and that if you program enough new keys the old ones get overwritten:

I think I have also read that the general situation is that if your ECU has to be replaced then so do your keys, so I guess a last resort to invalidate the lost key would be to replace the ECU, but I'm pretty sure this would be prohibitively expensive.  I have done a bit of Googling the subject and it seems there is a guy called Ian who runs a company called Motomatrix who specialise in Honda ECU and HISS problems.  Might be worth checking that out.

According to the procedure of HISS key registration, all keys are registered again, so it's safe to assume that all keys are wiped. You can't just add or delete a key.

As I understand PCM/ECU reads the ID of every key through RFID technology and remembers it until you start a new registration procedure.

You can certainly add a new key, but I believe there is a maximum number of registered keys the ECU will recognise at one time. I don't know enough about the technical details to be specific on this.

As Fred says, the coding process is not overly complicated, basically just needs a wire with a resistor and follow the procedure, you can find it on youtube, as far as I know all Honda HISS equipped bikes use the same procedure.

You can get key blanks with the chip on the auction site  for around £8, the chips are common type.

Andy just to cover yourself--go to the dealer and get new keys and reset them--- as the lost key may used to steal your bike--or it may be return--but your insurance company wont be very understanding in a claim---hope you get sorted out.

In the meantime get yourself a disc lock, or good chain..

When I lost my key I had to buy a chipped blank from Honda for about £40. I had to get a locksmith to cut it for me and my local dealer reset the two keys for £10. Then I found the original key which still unlocks the bike but isn't recognised by the ignition system. After I'd paid for all this I discovered I had lost key insurance cover (which I'd forgotten about).

Having only one key if your bike gets stolen could become a major issue with your insurer. You have a duty of care for the insured property. Check to see if you have lost key cover. In any event get it changed over as soon as possible. I assume you have checked in nearby shops or offices to see if someone has handed it in? I have little connectors that I have on the key rings. I detach the bike key when in use and put it straight back on when getting off so I don’t end up having a senior moment and losing it or putting it in a safe place.
