unfortunately it looks like the fuel pump has failed on my bike as it wont run een with direct power....

looking at the OEM part its north of 450 gbp !!!!!!

does anyone have any experience with alternative aftermarket fuel pumps on the NC (ive used them on my Ranger Rover), but not sure on availability on the NC given the relatively small numbers.

I have no experience of aftermarket fuel pumps on bikes but I can say that the cheap pump I bought from one of the UK's biggest LR parts suppliers for my Freelander is just that:  it whines very loudly.  The LR specialist who fitted the pump (which I had sourced) told me cheap ones can do this.  I can't say whether the same problem applies to all cheap fuel pumps but you might want to check the point.

I've seen it done on Bavarian Monster Wobbles. The pump internals all seem mechanically similar (if of variable quality) so once you have the case off anything of that type will get you mobile. The work involved was pretty easy, but under a lot of seals and plastic. I've also seen pictures of the old pump being reduced to a feed out of the bottom of the tank and any old car pump fitted externally. This was also a far from home bodge but worked.

If your bike is in bits try googling any part numbers on the original. The manufacturer selling directly under their own brand is always a good way if you can and you sometimes find another vehicle uses the same bit, but that manufacturer has a lower AM margin.

The Honda item will fit with less hassle and is guaranteed to work.

My Freelander has just had it's second replacement in tank pumps, but it is 17 1/2 years old, so I can forgive it that

Bummer! What happened? Did it break down again? Or just fail to start?

Do a bit of research, I found that the fuel pump for the Triumph Street Triple was the same as certain models of Yamaha R1. The Yamaha part was much cheaper (sigh).

Sorry no name on the pump, just a paper with fitment details..

I remember it was a bit of a fag to fit as it is just the pump no

filter or mount. I had to very carefully strip the OE pump of it

skeleton and fit to the new pump. Worth a look see thou for

the money.

Lyn.

PS: you can try this one if you want, but it for models from

200cc to 650cc..

Yep it failed to start a few times when switch off / on solved it, but then just refused to start one morning. Checked out the wiring and power getting to the pump. Directly wired the pump just to see f it would run, but no joy, so looks like a new pump.

Found a clean looking on at a bike breakers off a 2015 supposedly low miles bike. Mine had done 50k so it's probably a much lower hrs pump

im in Argentina for the rest of the week so another project for when I get back at the weekend

Just get a used one from a breakers/auction site (as you say you've found one). Failed pumps are extremely rare on the NC, a second-hand one will almost certainly be perfectly OK.

When I had my starting issues while on holiday a couple of years ago I wondered if the pump had failed (hence knowing about the connector down next to the tank). The mechanic guy we got to had a word with Honda France and they said straight out that fuel pump faults on the NC are almost unknown and pointed us to other areas.

At least you've tracked down the culprit. Good news (sort of .... ).

Well just an update now the bike is working again on the issue.

I had thought it was the fuel pump before I went off to To the sun for a week- an expensive  fix.

Got it back early this morning and put the bench power supply on the fuel pump and it ran ok

bit more investigation an I could see voltage sometimes at the pump but very high resistance (so low amp pull)

had a think and did what I should have done first thing before taking all the plastics off and check the relay, and found it bad - simply fix,

and all working :-)

Fuel pump failed on brother in laws BMW k75, he was shocked by the price of a new BMW pump, iirc it was about £350 complete, I looked on auction site and on amazon and replica pumps were £30-35 next day delivery, he bought one and only difference he could see was the plastic bag, it's still working fine now

Useful info, thanks for the update. At least it goes to reinforce the opinion from Honda (France) that the NC fuel pump is basically extremely reliable. I'll definitely file this info away in the "must remember" folder.

Moral of the story, systematic fault finding, ask questions, get ideas, discuss, search and be prepared to widen the scope as necessary, and sometimes it turns out to be less disastrous than at first feared. Been there, have the T-shirt! :)
