I'm fitting an adjuster and a GPS bar to my CB500X screen bracket. I need longer bolts than those that fix the screen bracket to the bike. But I'm not great at the M business.

These have 10mm long thread, and the thread diameter looks to be 5mm. What have I got?

M5 x 0.5 10mm long by the sound of if.

Thanks Andy. What does the 0.5 stand for?

It's the pitch, how far the peaks are from each other. On small threads there is no real variation unless you deal with watchmakers or Russians. On say M12 there is 1.0, 1.25, 1.5 etc, fine to course. You will meet the fine where the forces really need a bigger bolt but it won't fit. A fine in a course hole will jam about half a thread in.

Without seeing the bolt it'll be a bit tricky to guess the size. If it's about 5mm diameter then chances it'll be an metric M5 thread, the next dimension is the pitch. The usual M5 thread pitch size is 0.8 but it could be a fine pitch 0.5.

Here is a site that explains the measurements.

If you look up your bike on a parts website, it often gives the spec of the bolt concerned.

e.g. https://www.fowlersparts.co.uk/parts/6577359/cb500xa/upper-coverwindscreen

e.g. if it's part 16 it's Pan Head M6 x 10

(CX500A 2018 may not be your bike, please check model selected)
