Resurrection

Finally!! after 7 months my Cat N NC750SA 2016 was united with me (wife said, my face was glowing bright). The delivery driver mistakenly started it as they are supposed to check on delivery, I quickly switched it off. His mistake shows the battery is not drained and the vehicle starts. As per peace of mind and in the process of resurrection i would intend to do the following bits to clear the debris and change the broken clutch cover.

1.Drain the oil first.

2.Remove the clutch cover and check for debris.

3.Remove any debris if found and give a liquid clean for minute debris (pls suggest which liquid to be used, petrol???)

4.Fit the new clutch cover (bought for £50 from that site) using the instant gasket tube (halfords-granville)

5.Open the sump and clean it ---??????  please advice this is needed or not

5.Replace the oil filter with Hiflo HF 204-- (need to buy wrench)

6.Fill the oil and start the engine.

Also need to replace clutch lever (thinking to change to short levers), front left winker(just glass cover) and need to sort left bar end (needs investigation as it all looks good from outside but woobly when fitted).

 Awaiting for weekend

5. Remove sump plate and clean. Needed?

Only you can answer this. It depends whether you think there could possibly be anything in there which could do some harm. It's your engine.

As said, if it was mine I would definitely drop the sump plate off for 2 reasons. One, there might be something in there, and two, it's so simple to do on the NC it seems false economy (of effort) not to. If the engine didn't have a sump plate (as many don't) then I'd probably take the chance, but it has one so why not?

I'd have the sump off before fitting the new clutch cover, just so if you did want to flush anything through you have an open engine which would make that a lot easier. Close it up when you're happy it can be closed.

Thanks, will do the sump clean as well.  What cleaning material can be used, petrol or degreaser????

I definitely Would not use petrol, modern fuels are nasty stuff and the vapour is very volatile, unless you like the significant risk of going up in a ball of flame 🔥 Even outside.......

Any decent proprietary de-greaser will be fine, but may not be necessary. Wipe the sump out with a cloth and if there's nothing there it should be ok. As Embee said, get the old clutch cover off before you replace the sump plate and chase/flush anything through if necessary.

As slowboy says, not petrol. If you really need to use any liquid then paraffin or even white spirit will do, it'll mix with engine oil with no issues and won't attack any rubbers etc. I wouldn't worry too much about small residual amounts, it won't do any harm.

I'd try to simply wipe with heavy duty paper wipes or clean cloth/rag where possible, chances are there isn't really any dirt etc in there that require any sort of cleaning as such, just wipe, check there are no obvious bits and pieces, and you should be fine. Have a good look round with a decent torch/light, you should spot anything significant.

Hi All, 1.Drained the oil

2.Removed the clutch cover , found the broken metal bits, removed and cleaned with white sprint.

3.Removed the oil filter

4.Removed the sump cover.

5.Cleaned all the parts using white spirit and fitted back the sump cover with instant gasket.

6.Filled oil filter with a bit of oil.

7.Fitted the new clutch cover with instant gasket.

8.Filled the engine oil and checked for any leakages.

Everything looks absolutely fine , no leaks and no issues.

Switched on the ignition, all the lights came up , but the engine light is not going off and wont start. Fixed everything and bike looks new, no issues but the engine light won't go off and its not starting. Any suggestions or check list to follow ?????

 Thanks

Nothing you have done is electrical so none should be the problem. So look for wiring you may have disturbed or left unplugged, disconnected or worse...trapped! Engine earth lead? Any sensors that you may have disturbed, side stand switch....the kill switch? Wouldn't be the first time this has caught people out.

I am pretty sure, i haven't touched any electrical. It started a week before by the delivery driver. All i done is replaced oil, oil filter, cleaned sump plate and clutch cover. I did changed the left front winker(had to take the front headlight assembly) and fiddled a bit with the left bar ends.

Checked the kill switch and it works perfectly, if its off i can see the dash mark in the dash board and also can hear the sound on putting back.

Also checked the side stand switch.

I doubt on the battery, sometimes they show dodgy readings as it was lying idle for last 7 months (surprised it did started on the delivery day). Plugged my charger from that day.

I'll connect it to new battery and recheck all the previously visited areas. Booked for next Tuesday to the dealer to run his diagnostics and identify the problem.

The two keys aren't together on the same ring are they? If so can confuse HISS - separate and try each one.

Fuse?

I think Mike is referring to having both ignition keys on the same key ring as the chips in the keys can the affect the HISS system thus preventing the bike starting.

You did connect up the crank-angle trigger wires?

Bike is picked up by the dealer yesterday and when i rang in the evening, he said he got a strange error code in the diagnostics and will look into it today.:ermm:

Good News. Baby is back. I was thinking its not getting the fire/spark to start , which came out true. When the dealer said about the weird code, I explained him what i did and he opened the crank case again and said crank case wires are not fitted properly. But i am pretty sure i fitted them as they were previously. Anyhow its sorted with just 200 pound bill including pick up, engine oil and MOT.

Now what ???

Do i need to speak to DVLA ??? My insurer might have informed CAT N write off, but MOT is passed & DVLA knows it, My road tax is still there untill May'19 and haven't taken any returns for the last 6 months.

Do i need to call my insurance and inform the bike is back on road and do i have to pay any extra as it is now CAT N write off ???

I would let them know, just in case.

I doubt there will be an increase in premium, at least for this year

Ok, Got sorted all the things now and to list , i went on to the DVLA website and put my number plate, it came as taxed and MOT untill next year. So nothing to worry about them.

Called my insurance and told the bike has now passed MOT. They requested for a copy of MOT certificate (not needed as they can check on DVLA website), sent and they called back and said i can use until my insurance runs out without any extra payment. Happy days.

Good news.

Isn't it amazing the ignorance/incompetence/ineptitude of some folk like your insurance company? Surely they know by now what details are available online from the DVLA?

Checked on the DVLA website by entering the vehicle registration, shows taxed and MOT until X date. I was wondering how will the DVLA know about the bike been written off as it passed the MOT and as per my insurance company's letter (https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipNsRizC2Rqgpmlz4_L43LEwjCVKRT3A0QeNFQezktFWHw_cXVd6cCrxfG2g2Po-jQ/photo/AF1QipNkXiymAlJgWNy_aDvwbJMpCDZAhHT_Tl44gp01?key=YXYwVXNNMVVQR3ptZjZkY1Rtd2MySy1KTXdOTnd3)

it is my duty to inform DVLA about the write off, which i haven't done and got the MOT passed.

Called the DVLA just now to be on safe side and told them my bike is written off and i had repaired and MOT is passed. They said you don't need to do all this , if it has MOT, road tax and insurance you can use it. Asked what about the CAT N write off and they said its insurance job to let us know. Bit confused now!!!!

I know one day i 'll be blamed by the insurance and DVLA for not having information. Scapegoats .

When my old X9 was slightly damaged, I simply repaired it myself no claim was made to my or anyone's insurance. I did make an injury claim to the other party though via a specialist in that field.

When I came to trade in the bike the dealer found it to be Cat C which I didn't even know about. They used Experian to run the checks who found it out. All I can assume is that the injury claims company tried to get the bike repair also on the claim but it was rejected as they did ask me for an estimate of the repair cost.

So if you have not made any claim of any sort to another party or to your own insurer it should never be recorded but if any estimate for cost of repair was submitted it will have been checked against the value and the category logged accordingly. DVLA may only pick this up on a change of ownership and I don't think they are concerned with this, but any outstanding finance check made by a potential buyer will flag it straight away as it does affect the value of the bike.
