tank removal

first off have you run it ? if its just in the tank then you could syphon it out . i have done this on my superduke and have had no ill effects . if not then i would imagine its a total strip and flush . i am really unsure how far this could go . for instance is it possible to place a temp line with a non return valve in line to a clean fuel to pump the tank with its own pump if its a job to get the tank out ? me i just removed my tank and tipped it out then flushed it with premium fuel

using the hand syphon is a good way

I totally agree with Tony. If you haven’t started the engine then it’s a much easier job. Simply siphon the tank and re-fill with petrol. It’s impossible to get all the diesel out and the engine will smoke a bit for the first couple of tanks. Keep topping it up with petrol (every litre of petrol you add will reduce the percentage of contaminated fuel).

Edit: Get yourself something like this. Halfords stock them. You put a length of fuel hose on each end and put one end in your tank and the other into a suitable container. There’s an arrow to indicate direction of flow. Then squeeze the bulb until it’s sucked as much out of the tank as you can possibly manage. Good luck.

thanks for all the advice the trouble is I have run it then broke down I guess this would be a strip down in the bike shop as I don't really know what to do would anybody know a fuel specialist or just ring my local bike shop

There are specialists who sort this stuff out. They come to you fully equipped to deal with it. I can’t actually recommend anyone because I have no idea where you’re located?

Just google ‘miss fuelling specialists’ and add your town.

Its not as bad as petrol in a deisel...

As Ted said...

Syphon or drain the tank as much as possible... And refil with petrol.

Make sure ya battery is healthy...

If you can find the fuel line and is accessable remove from engine to a suitable container,

And tufn key on to prime thextank / start the pump a few times...

Re-connect and Try to start...

Nothing to looses

The petrol is designed to run-ish on piss poor petrol in the back of beyond...

Definitely. Diesel into a petrol motor just adds a fuel that won't burn, it can be flushed out and apart from possibly a little smoke during the next tank as any residue gets washed through it will be fine. The auto prime will flush out the filter and injector so drain the diesel thoroughly, add a small amount of petrol, ignition on and prime a few times and drain, repeat then add petrol and ride, try not to fill the tank fully until any smoke from the exhaust has ceased.

Putting petrol in a diesel is another matter as the components in a diesel fuel system are not designed to be resistant to the ethers in petrol. It hardens plastics and makes them brittle very quickly so diesels have to be completely dismantled and flushed immediately and some parts replaced if future reliability is required.

Sorry to hear of your troubles dikyboy, but as others have said this is not a terminal situation and is recoverable with the advice provided. Once she’s up and running again use some redex or similar in a few tanks to clean the injectors too.

As said above, probably no lasting damage, it's putting petrol in a diesel that causes serious problems.....

I did this when I bought the K100. Flew to Aberdeen, paid and set off home. Made it as far as Edinburgh then filled the tank with Diesel. The Diesel pump handle was green FFS. I was the third person on the forecourt syphoning with hose the garage provided, so you may think it was a con. Anyway, syphoned, filled, rode home. Last I heard the old lump was still running at 36 years old.

Glad you are sorted.

Hello there, did the same stupid thing with my nc750x and filled with diesel.  Does the tank have to come out (to flush) and do l need to change the filter?

I made that mistake to put nearly a gallon in oh bugger!

paid for that then fill up with petrol and took a chance .

never notice any difference she ran fine kawasaki ER6F

if you have a full tank then I would do what the guys said.

once you've done that just fill up no need to faf on with injectors etc just ride a few miles to clear the desy out.

Just syphon the tank fully, fill with premium and top up every 50 miles for the next three or four tank fulls.

Not sure there is a filter?

I did if with a K100 by the Forth Bridge. Devious Nerks put a green handle on the Diesel pump 😡. Had a syphon pipe all ready and knew which drain to direct you to. Was told "That happens a lot". Suspect it was a con trick 😡😡😡

Yes, a friend of mine has done it twice on his VFR. In both cases it smoked like it had holed a radiator but draining the tank by syphoning out the diesel and refilling with premium restored it back to full health, once it started. I always look at what it says on the pump, irrespective of what colour the hose is - that’s how he got caught out twice.

Anyway, I thought the NC was a diesel….😊

As andy says sremove as much as possiable refuillwith fresh fuel and run

You may need to clean plugs to get going and even use easy start

Otherwise teh pump and the filter are accessed by removing the tank  It looks to be a mission so I work on getting it going without

I had to do this several times for customers not failed yet !

Yes, I can confirm it will smoke like a chimney when  you get it running as the diesel will be unburnt so will emerge as white smoke. We've all done it..
