Rear Shock Rebuild

Afternoon all

My stepson's 700x has a knackered rear shock absorber.  We're looking at options.  Budget is limited.  My first thoughts were;

  • Is it DIY rebuildable?
  • Can we straight fit something else, such as an R6 shock (just an example, not saying I want to use an R6 shock)?
  • Any other options you guys can think of?
  • Nitron, Ohlins, WP, etc will be waaaaaay out of budget
  • MCT rebuild- any experiences of this option?
  • Don't want to put some old ratty item off the bay onto it- could be paying to just bolt another problem on

Many thanks

Have you checked out Hagen shocks? They are usually very reasonably priced and good quality.

I had MCT replace the rear shock with a Nitron unit. Good luck in trying to rebuild it, as Darren at MCT said the original was one of the nastiest ones he'd come across and guessed Honda must have got a job lot, at around £10 per unit.

If you don't want to spend much, keep looking for a secondhand unit....good luck!

The NCs are brilliant bikes, but remember they are built to a budget.

I've used FTR Suspension at Beazley End, near Braintree in Essex. They are very helpful and skilled.

I don't know where you're based so that may not help?

Hagon or YSS will cost £300 to replace. Try online for a secondhand shock from a reputable supplier if the budget is limited.

If the body of the shock is ok maybe just buy a spring kit from Hyperpro...

Good luck!

Have a look at M- Shock.  Reasonable prices, and quality looks good.   I got one for my Integra and they will make up the unit to suit your weight etc.

If you are stuck for a second hand mono shock, I still have the original unit done 8K miles I think.

Finding something suitable from another bike is not a simple job, unless someone else has done all the donkey-work for you.

I spent a long time trying to find a suitable alternative for my Integra, but gave up.

You need to match the length between centres, the stroke, the approximate spring rate and thus the damper characteristics. The stroke, spring rate, and damper are all intertwined to a greater or lesser extent. The stroke has to take into account the ratio of the rear suspension linkage system and the designed wheel travel, this links with the weight of the laden bike and the spring rate, and the damper matches the other two.

Also the ends (eyes) have to be the same design or you need to be able to adapt them accordingly, in this regard the NC uses pretty standard type rubber bush at the top with a 10mm bolt, and a needle roller bearing at the bottom with a sleeve which takes a 10mm bolt.

The X has a longer shock (315mm???? not sure, you need to check) than the S/Integra (300mm) and a longer wheel travel. 315mm is much more common length than 300mm, so with a bit of searching you  ight find something suitable as a basis for adapting. I've had springs from https://dfaulknersprings.com/ and I can recommend them, but you need to know the required rate, the stroke, the length, and diameter of the coil and whether it will fit on the spring seats on your shock.

Unless you are really determined, I'd go along with the others and say either a good condition used item, or an aftermarket, YSS probably the best bang for buck.

I ended up with a Nitron which I adapted with a Showa type lower needle roller bearing and a remote hydraulic preload adjuster, but that's all another story.

Use the opportunity to upgrade to a YSS, fitted for under £300 by certain NC specialists.

Just for interest, I started to have a quick look on the auction site to see what was available, and the first item which came up was number 193083949424

As anyone with an NC will know, one of the worst aspects is all the carp which gets onto the rear shock, and this looks an interesting possible fix.

I fitted a home made shock-sock to mine, made from some old waterproof leggings.

Thanks for all of your replies- most helpful.

Trisaki- could be an option.  Although I live in Surrey, I often visit a friend in Pullborough, so may be able to pop over to collect.

Many thanks to Trisaki.  My stepson popped over Friday after work.  Said that Mark is a great bloke and they had a great chat about bikes.  Guess I know what I'm doing Sunday now...
