Fairly sure my tyres are on the very edge of legality, but my finger is only so good. Does anyone have a measuring thingy they can recommend?

You can get keyring depth gauges on that auction site for £1.59.

Trust your judgement. If you think they're bordering on illegal, then they probably are. ;)

The rear on my NC is needing sorted ASAP.

Do you have a tyre in mind for your next set? Just curious.

Better than your finger may be the tread wear indicators on the tyre!

Look for a small triangle on the sidewall, the indicator (often a small bar across a sipe) is on the tyre tread above.

This is what Avon say: "Peer into the bottom of the tread grooves of your tyre and you'll see raised rubber strips. These are the Tyre Wear Indicators; if your tyre tread wears down to their level on any part of the tread, it's definitely time for new tyres, because you're approaching the legal minimum."

Google Images will give you a closer look...

I do indeed know about the indicators. I'm interested in measuring how much more to the indicator I can get. But since I just span the rear gunning it in the rain, that settles it.

Keep for a track day?

Hi Phil,

On a profiled motorcycle tyre those tread wear indicators should be looked upon as a rough visual guide,

Simply because they are not always positioned at the point of maximum tread wear.

Turns out I didn't spin it at all. Just did the same thing on the same bit of road in the dry and it felt exactly the same. Just a bit of dodgy surfacing.
