I know it's 12 months or 8000 miles but as I've only covered about 4500 miles it's obviously going to be 12 months but is that from date of purchase or from the date of the 600 mile service?

And finally what sort of cost are we looking at, yes I know others have posted costs but they seem to vary quite alot?

For any London based folk I can recommend Motoden. Yes the costs are slightly higher (£175 for the 8k service) but a nice bunch of guys, no hassle and my v dirty bike came back spotless.

That's helpful Micheal as thats the only item i am taking to a mech to do so its a plug in job and if theirs no need to adjust they don not do but do they still charge the 2 hours labour by say they h

Duncan they don't really bother that much about being spot on either date or mileage-- I had mine done at 8600 miles no problem--They wanted £159.99--No too much so they did it for £120 -- and to be quite honest it is still overpriced for basicly a oil & filter change--the chain and bike are washed after mechanic doe's the service for some unknown reason--but when I looked at bike when I brought it home--there was no oil on chain(I oil it everytime I go out and it is like new) the clutch cable had not been oiled--so it's a dear service. I am asking next time if I can watch the service being done--I can and did at 4000 miles change oil & filter.

I would not take it to any garage if I did not have to, because of warranty.

Hope this helps--we are all paying different prices--it is wrong. :frantics:

I wasn't going to take it to be serviced and do it myself but it's just for the warranty really.

I think that it's an annual service so it would be 12 months from purchase. I had mine done after about 14 months (partly because I'd crashed and couldn't ride) at 7260 miles. Cost was £203 but as a 700 it had the valves checked and there was another 1/2 hr labour on some other bits that they did for me.

Labour at Rochdale Honda was £48 per hour at the time. The only things that are likely to be replaced are air and oil filters. Everything else should be check and adjust.

They said the valves are not checked until the 16000 miles service but only then if the bike settings on computer are out of adjustment-- that's what they told me !!!

Hi Duncan, I too am getting ready for the second service on my 700x but after reading a lot of the posts on this very informative site I was left rather confused as to what I needed doing having only covered 3300 happy miles in 12 months. So in I goes to the dealer (P&H in Crawley) to ask how much and was met by about 5 mechanics (it was the end of the day) sitting behind the desk, I was quoted £150 possibly a little less for the service. I also asked when the valve clearances needed doing, after tapping away on his computer I was informed as with all Honda engines not until 16000 miles, I did question this because I had read a lot of members saying 8000 miles but was informed 16000 was correct.

Hope this helps.

Nigel.

I was charged £159.99 for a 12 month service. I should have sent Michael (bone kicker) ! How did you get them to reduce the charge ? I assume it was Preston Honda? Mine was done at Blackpool. As already said, unless you watch the service you have no idea what is actually done. We have to rely on their integrity.

Now I'm not sure about this so someone may put me right but I thought I read that a service only has to be carried out by a (competent person) as long as genuine honda parts are used To maintain the warranty??

Nigel I asked the very same question --Yes you can go to any VAT registered garage --But because we back you up on any warranty claims it's best to come to us!!! I don't remember any back up from dealer when my first set of tyres wore out a 1200 miles more the denial -- have you been doing doughnuts? and wheelies??--" I wish I could I said " :poke:

And when the crankcase paint had worn through at 40 miles--I was told it's your boot catching and rubbing--I had only gone in for a tin of paint to respray it never mind making a claim--I did not buy the can of paint from them.

Some while a go--one of the forum member's who is a solicitor I think--told us all the correct information-- can any one remember? I cant as per usual :hmm:

Alan I just told them it was too dear and was 3 weeks pension to me.

Thanks Michael, my question is this, if a fully payed up qualified mechanic working in a general garage servicing anything from water pumps to buses would honda still expect said person to take his bike to a honda dealership and pay £150 for them to do what would cost said person £45 in parts to do himself as long as you keep a record of whats done and use honda parts it should not effect the warranty.

As I have said before one of the reasons for different prices is location as some parts of the country such as London business rates  cost of property and wages are much higher than others therefore the dealer has to charge more to cover this. You should think yourself lucky that you live in the North where these sort of things are cheaper

Michael, I'll try that tac next year! Only just had mine done. Cheers Alan

It actually says in the owners manual (Pg 58 for the X)

"Maintenance work should be performed in accordance with Honda's standards and specifications be properly trained and equipped technicians. Your dealer meets all of these requirements. Keep an accurate record of maintenance to help ensure that your motorcycle is properly maintained. Make sure that whomever performs the maintenance completes this record"

and on the next page is the maintenance schedule with some items marked Intermediate and some Technical. For intermediate it says "We recommend service by your dealer, unless you have the necessary tools and are mechanically skilled. Procedures are provided in an official Honda Shop Manual."

Technical (Wheels, Tyres, Steering Head Bearings) it says ""In the interest of safety, have your motorcycle serviced by your dealer.

BUT...  on every service there is at least one item marked as being Technical.

From what's written I wonder how Honda dealers could justify refusing to supply the shop manual (I read it here in the last days that a dealer said they wouldn't/couldn't supply them..)

If the bike has only done 4500 miles - only 3900 miles since an oil and filter change. I would do a mini service (quite easy on the NC) and change the engine oil and filter plus oil the chain if you don't do it regularly. Do a check all over - tyres etc. You only need a genuine oil filter (don't forget a new sump plug washer) which you must get a receipt to maintain warranty history. That's all I did - cost about £40 all in.

Well just booked mine in next week for it's second service at approx 4000 miles at a very nice £90, I asked what the service entailed and was informed the usual oil, filter, brake strip down, chain clean and re-lube and replace all fluids.

Labour = 2 hours

RESULT

:) :) :)

There is also the question of changing brake and radiator fluids - normally done after two years.

See above.... ;)

Duncan,

Where did you do your service? If my supplying dealer asks me much more I'm tempted to use the same facility.

I use my local dealer in Stafford, not my supplying dealer I might add..... ;)

I paid approx. £85 for my 600 mile service at that dealer (where I bought the bike)two years ago. I would suggest that you check that the price does include changing all fluids (not just topping up) and not just the engine oil - however, you might be getting a cheap winter deal on servicing. You do not have to use an official Honda dealer for a service. All you need to do is prove that you have used OEM parts. I know of at least one dealer in Stoke which has a good mechanic and is probably cheaper on labour rates.

Does anybody have the service schedules for the nc machines?

I spoke to my dealer the other day about adjusting rear shocks his mechanic was very dismissive saying he'd never done one. Didn't inspire confidence in me at all especially when they want top dollar for servicing.

It would be nice to have the schedules to fill in while I do the work myself. At least I'll know it's been done and done properly in fact it would be great to have a downloadable version on this site so anybody could work to it if they wanted to. We could take that a stage further and have a photographed worked through (if anybody has the time and inclination and is a general good egg enough to do it)

The service schedules are in the Handbooks, but I've seen them posted in a thread here somewhere a while ago.

I don't think that the adjustment of the rear shock is mentioned anywhere.

Link to post

Basically you Tw@t it with a hammer and screwdriver to loosen the locknut :-)

II just wondered if they had a proper tool for doing it or had to take it off the bike but he didn't know.

I've a decent shock waiting for the sale to clear before I fit it.
