ABS light

Hi my ABS light has come on on my ncx 62 plate and will not go off can anyone help any ideas ?

Check the battery voltage, fuses, then have a good look at the polewheels and sensors for dings/gaps/run out, then think about checking the loom out. It is never the ECU unless you've had any welding done.

 

This time of year the battery dropping on cranking is the odds on favourite. If it just didn't put the light out one cold morning, as against coming on during a ride, the odds get cut further still.

On my K series BMW's the ABS went pig if the battery was left standing. Charged the battery and re set using a thin bit of wire in the three hole connector hidden under the seat in a set sequence. The other cause was removing the rear wheel to fit a new tyre and on re fitting the wheel not setting the sensor gap for the polwheel. I use to knock the vendor down on the asking price on a K bike with a flashing ABS and had them working within a hour. Which was just as well as BMW wanted £1000 for a ECU

My first check would be to clean around the sensors at the wheels. I see you state Scotland, there has been a lot of salt etc put on roads in last week. Smcg in glasgow

A couple of folk on this forum have had this and found the polewheels have been bent (as Andy's post), typically someone else nudging another bike wheel into it in a tight parking spot. The tolerance for the acceptable run-out is quite tight, I can't recall exactly what it is at the moment, but basically anything obviously visible is probably too much.

Also check for any metallic debris on the pickup which will significantly attenuate the abs signal. I once found "whiskers" on one of mine

 It'll reset itself once the cause of it being on is fixed.

 Also, I don't think the ABS works whilst the warning light is on.

Remember you need to go above 6mph (I think) before the light will go off anyway.

 

You can interrogate the system for fault codes if necessary, the method and codes are given in the workshop manual which I think you can get if you donate to this forum (top of page).

"Reset" is dealer speak for clearing the error memory. They sweep the faults under an electronic carpet, make them unavailable to those of us who might be able to interpret what they mean and charge you 60- quid. With no active faults, the light will go off when the last component (a wheel sensor) confirms function.

 

With the light on you have to assume it shut down. With some faults, some parts of it keep going, so you might have one channel working. Bike systems are so basic and limited they will mostly be off.

 

The sensors need to generate a signal to confirm function. A good one will do this at 2 mph. The manual will say 7 kph to cover the allowed tolerances.

 

You can normally blink code a honda by grounding one of the pins on the diagnostic plug and keying the ignition but on the NC I don't know. An OBD reader is far more civilised and they may have dropped the blink code function now the readers are common and the only laptop in the workshop has escaped the storemans e-bay and dodgy DVD operations..

On my wife's car you turn the ignition key in the ignition on and off quickly 5 times and the error codes come up . You then look on the Internet owners club site to see what they mean so you can repair it , all very civilised .

Hi, as said before it resets itself (although it says in the workshop manual that the system has to be 'reset' by shorting two connections of the DCL (battery compartment) using a specialist tool.

 

The other day I changed the cush-drive (the rubber dampers of the rear wheel as the constant stop-and-go of London traffic wore them out within 18k miles), took the rear wheel sensor off but then re-installed it the wrong way round as I was getting tired and as it was getting dark, etc. (bracket first and then the sensor) which increased the distance between the sensor and the pulser ring.

 

The ABS-light stayed on and the ABS didn't work (as experienced when returning from work avoiding a collision with a car that pulled into my way).

 

I changed the bracket/sensor as per how it should be and the ABS-light first stayed on (although I was going faster than 6 mph) but after another ON/OFF of the ignition the function was back as normal (as soon as the bike got above 6 mph).
