rjp996 1,091
Whats the wisdom on the type of grease to use on your bike - Lithium grease vs Ali waterproof grease vs copper grease vs Molly..... My unde4rstandign is that some are better for high speed bearing use, and some better for slow sheering forces... So what the wisdom on the type to use in general on the bike - eg - Axle, Suspension pivit's, swingarm bolt - i'm no so sure on bearings, as i cant see how you can get access to re-pack without removing them (and destroying). Got to take my swingarm off again and was going to treat the poor bike to a good greasing :-) Thanks Link to post

embee 7,288
Comprehensive list from Stelios there, however .......................................... In simple terms, for rolling element bearings (ball/needle roller etc) I personally use Castrol "High Temperature Grease" in most cases, which is commercially widely available, a lithium based general purpose grease which as far as I can tell has superseded the old Castrol LM and has better high temperature properties, and quite similar to the "Templex N3" listed above. It has a working temperature up to 140C and a drop point of 260C (where it basically runs off surfaces) so should be OK in the DCT shift gear reduction case for example (bolted on the engine so runs at engine temperature, 100C typically to 120C max). One item which I don't agree with (but who am I to say?) is the recommendation to use a moly containing grease in the suspension bearings. These are needle rollers and it is not normal industry practice to use a moly grease on such items. Moly is intended as a solid lubricant where there is sliding between surfaces, especially low amplitude reversing such as plain bushes in old Brit bike swingarms for example. My understanding is that it can promote skidding of rolling elements, which is undesirable. You make your own judgement on that. Moly is useful between the dogbones and shock eye for example where the surfaces slide if they touch. Where brake systems are involved, caliper pistons etc, never use a mineral based grease or oil, use ONLY "red rubber grease" or some silicone based greases. The rubbers used for brake fluid (EPDM usually I believe) do not like mineral oils and can react badly. This also applies for rubbers used in contact with glycol coolant, which are usually similar to brake fluid seal materials. Coolant hoses usually have an outer layer of mineral oil resistant rubber, the inner lining being EPDM etc. Copper grease is NOT a lubricant, it is an anti-seize used to avoid studs/bolts seizing due to temperature or corrosion. Don't use it on moving parts. Edited March 28, 2017 by embee Link to post

rjp996 1,091
thanks for all this - a lot to go through... embee - from the sound of it for greasing the wheel axles and the swingarm pivot bolts etc (eg not the bearings themselves) - you use Castrol HT grease. Link to post
ste7ios 469
I only know about good olive oil! Every manufacturer has a little different recipe... If I remember correctly Yamaha uses a lithium soap and not MoS2 grease on bearings. BMW uses much more lubricants than any Japanese manufacturer... Honda has this recipe for many many years... That's why I asked Dow Corning / Molykote directly about what lubricants I need (and of course what's available in my country). 1 Link to post

The wheel and swingarm spindles can have anything you like applied really, it's purely for ease of fitment and to stop corrosion. There is nothing running directly on the spindles as a bearing, they are just big bolts. Link to post
