Service requirements

My bike was first registered on 5/4/17 and had its first oil change service at 635 miles on the 31/5/17.

This might be an obvious question but.......when does my bike require its next service....is it 1 year from date of first registration or 1 year from date of oil change service?...

Can anyone clarify this. Thanks.

One year from the last service. Give or take. A week or two either way is unimportant.

To echo what Tex said, don't worry about months or a couple of thousand miles. The mechanical bits will stand double the miles and three or five years. Once you've booked it in, you have a tick in the warranty box which is the main purpose.

Read some of the US oil analysis threads on ADV rider (if you can find them amongst the soft porn and gunz and moar gunz stuff). The analysis usually shows you can double the recommended oil change intervals. A few hard use riders and the fact they are selling the oil is what the manufacturers work to.

Thanks for the replies folks....I'll get it a Honda service to tick the warranty box (as you say Andy m)...after that the next one will be over 2 years so I'll be able to do the basics myself or independent for anything else.

You can go to independent mechanic straight off if they are VAT registered and stamp the book. That is a clear EU law (for the next 400 days or so).  I've done that with servicing my bike as it is just so much less expensive, but then mine is a 2013 bike....  As they say, 1 year or 8k depends which you get to first.

I know next to nothing about tinkering with a motorbike, therefore I pays the money and take it to a very good Honda Dealer with a Honda trained mechanic who happens to be very very good for all my servicing and mods. After nearly 4 years and 45,000 miles it hasn't missed a beat.

The only things an independent will not know about is any changes that Honda might bring in,or software updates  -like the speedo head issue on my '14 model ,which was changed under warranty. So you can't really ignore the Honda dealer - although i agree that paying their much higher costs can grate!

I agree Barry I don't mind paying a bit more for quality, I usually have a good idea if someone is trying it on or trying to rip me off.

There’s so much (too much?) on the internet these days that consumers know about re-calls and technical bulletins before half the dealers do. :)

But I fully agree that a mechanic you can trust whether independent or dealer is a big bonus. Even if, for some of us, that ‘trusted mechanic’ is ourselves. :D
