Rear Wheel Bearings

Afternoon All,

So I bought my NC700 Integra back off a local Dealer a few months ago (long story, don't ask why). Got it with 6 months warranty and it IS STILL under that warranty.

The bike is 2012 with Just over 16k on the clock. I noticed a noise coming from the bike when at motorway speeds, a kind of whine. Took it to a local garage who is sure it's the bearings. So first question is, am I looking for 6204 2RS bearings? The second question is, rather that trying to do it myself, it this a warranty claim. Should wheel bearings be lasting longer than 16k.

Thanks,

James

Have a search on here for wheel bearings, there are quite a few threads on the issue about life and warranty and the actual bearings needed and the superior SKF ones recommended. (there are 2+1=3 bearings)

Wheel bearings are covered under the Honda warranty from new - I had mine replaced after pointing the dealer to the wording of the exclusion clause.

The bearings are however are not hard to change, especially if you change them all out (that way you can just drift them out with a bar).

I used double sided sealed bearings SFK's from a bearing specialist and think they were only about £4 each.

As for them lasting 16k - one outer bearing on the rear wheel went on mine around the same miles - changed and done another 38k without any probs. One front wheel bearing went at around 42k - looked like water had got into it an rusted.

bearings are cheap, and I would second the recommendation I had to buy SFK's

Hi

I got mine replaced under warranty at approx 18500.

Hope this helps

Rang the dealer and they don't think it can be done under warranty. Plus they can't have the bike in for three weeks anyway. Don't want to go three weeks without the bike. But not happy to commute on it at the moment, knowing the wheel bearing is shot.

I'm racing this weekend and one of the lads who I race with is going to look at it for me. All I have to do is whip the wheel out and take it with me. Seems the easiest, quickest and cheapest way to do it.

Got the wheel off last night and I'm sure it is the bearing on the brake disc side. Going to take it to my race weekend for my mate to look at. But what size are these bearings. Are they ALL 6204 2RS? Also, is it worth me buying the seals for each side?

I would need to order the parts today so I have them before I go away the weekend.

The bearings in the wheel are 6204 with 2 rubber seals (various designations used for this, 2RS stands for 2 rubber seals, sometimes RR or UU is used for this. Z refers to a shield rather than a seal, you don't want these. Also you do NOT want C3 clearance grade bearings.) https://www.bike-parts-honda.com/pieces-honda-detail-60984-60984-NC700DC-2012-F_27-INTEGRA+700.html

I use only SKF or Koyo bearings usually. Various online suppliers, or local bearing stockists. I've had good service from https://www.bearingsrus.co.uk/ and https://simplybearings.co.uk/shop/ , just depends on stock and postage etc.

The sprocket carrier bearing is a different animal. I believe a double row angular contact design.

I find you can usually re-use the brake side dust seal (item 24) again if it is in decent condition and you don't wreck it getting it out. Having said that you may well decide it's worth replacing as a matter of course anyway. If you're not doing the carrier bearing there's no need to disturb the dust seal on that side (item 23)

Thanks for the information. So having had a feel of the bearing last night I'm sure it's the bearing on the brake side that has gone. I'm going to order two of them and get both sides done I think. I will try and order new seals as well. But they might not turn up in time for the weekend?

Thanks

James

Always do wheel bearings as pairs anyway, they are only a few ££. They should be fitted in the correct sequence, the right (brake) side one goes fully home in the housing, the other is fitted until the spacer is just nipped. The idea is that the wheel spindle tightens the inner races and the spacer together without applying axial load through the bearing races themselves.

6204 2RS should have been a cheaper option. The designation 2RS means rubber shielded both sides, the H specifies a higher grade of rubber for the seal's  which is a bit more resistant to the elements and in particular oil and grease. Hence the slightly higher price but will l probably last a little longer.
