Frunk Lock?

Simeon

Recommended Posts

So i'm new to the NC after having bought my 2018 NC750 XD. I have read posts about the locking mechanism for the frunk/fueling point being a little fragile.

Has this been adressed by Honda and the locks modified or do i need to be aware?

Not had a problem with mine and its ten years old. That said, I do frequently oil the lock and keep the locking mechanism greased nicely.

Ah lubrication, always makes things go in easier

No seriously that does make sense. Thanks

No issues with my frunk lock. Had her just over three years and still going in dry...

More likely that keys are in frunk when it is accidentally shut. DAHMIK (I don't, I haven't done it yet but others have). Also, it's good idea to lubricate the cable that operates the rear seat release to fill up. I'd say that's more likely to be an issue.

Slightly off topic but, I liked the idea to be able to open the frunk without having to switch the engine off and move the key so I can get quick access to a drink, snack or perhaps a map. Picking up on the idea from another forum I ordered some spare key blanks from Ali Express (97p each plus the postage) and got them cut by a local locksmith who said the Chinese blanks were actually very good quality metal. No HISS chip in them of course but then no chance of someone starting the bike with it either if you leave it in place. Other colours are available as well 👍😎

Great idea. Googled AliExpress and found reference to Honda motorcycle blank keys but couldn't see how to enter NC750x (presumably the year doesn't matter), and couldn't do it by matching up the price ie 97p. Also odd it says from UK rather than to UK ~ any chance of a link? Thks from a luddite!

I tried to open an account but despite several attempts never received the e-mail with the code number

Just found this. I wanted spare blank keys too. So I have ordered a couple (at 88 p each now, plus shipping bringing the total to £5.17). Got to be worth a try.

I have just checked and found that I have no key number on either of my keys, nor do I have a key tag with a number on it. This could cause me difficulty in getting a blank cut, but worse, should I lose both original keys (admittedly unlikely since I don't carry both at the same time) it would almost certainly cause me difficulty if I needed to get a new key coded for the ignition. I read somewhere that if that happened I would need a new ECU as well as keys - which sounds a tad expensive.....

Any view or experience here?

I thought I’d lost the key to my Crossrunner a couple of years ago. I did have the number but the bike was on the Honda database as confirmed by the supplying dealer anyway. Honda will issue one more key coded to the HISS on the bike’s ECU. Mine was ordered from Honda Germany. I forget the cost now but it would have covered the cost of an officially registered third (and final) key for that bike. I didn’t proceed because I found the key. That is the official way, as advised by the supplying dealer (a good, independently owned one). There are ways of doing it yourself from a blank key unofficially on the internet but I preferred the official way and didn’t want to risk having to fork out for another ECU and a set of official keys to match. Frunk keys are simpler as they don’t involve HISS.

Thanks. Good to know that I can get a third key before needing a new ECU. I've emailed my dealer for advice.

I have programmed a NC key with a transponder using the procedure outlined on the internet. It is very straightforward.

You can programme up to a maximum of 4 keys to the ECU using this technique.

If you have the key code on a tag then the outfits on the internet can cut the key.

They can also do this with a decent photograph of the key.

The other way is by cloning.

Timpsons can clone the key transponder, so in theory you can have as many cloned keys as you want. You need a key to be able to clone it of course.

I have had this done this too with my VFR but I had the code so I got these cut and all Timpsons did was clone the transponder.

The reason I didn't programme these myself, is the ECU refused to go into programming mode, a result of the ECU probably being flashed in the past.

If you have a single working key there is no reason to fork out for an ECU, you either programme a new key or get it cloned. It's not illegal.

And now, just 12 days later I have two new blanks. They seem reasonable quality. Just need to get them cut now so off to Timpsons.

Best of luck at Timpsons. Earlier this year I wanted a spare key for my CBF. The guy in Timpsons was helpful. He didn't have a suitable blank but said he'd cut one if I supplied it. So I bought one from the auction site. When I returned it was a different guy and he went mental when I explained things. He said that he would not cut a key not supplied by them. Next thing he's in face saying that he did it once and the guy came back and threatened him with a knife when it broke or didn't work. Luckily a local hardware shop was happy to cut the key for couple of quid.

I recently wanted a spare spare and a frunk key. I do have a tag on my spare key but it is more of a small plasticky paper label with just 4 digits e.g. A123 .

I didn't think that would be the key code so I ordered some cut from a photograph from that auction site. he has multiple listings both with and without the chip. I got one of each. they arrived within 2 days of ordering.

Perfect fit on both - and the spooky bit - he included the key number jotted on his business card, and yep! it was the same as the number on my spare key tag.

Coding your own, as long as you have one working hiss key is very simple and takes literally minutes. The only thing you need is about 2ft of wire and a 100 ohm resistor to make your own 'jump leads'.

Once you start coding new keys it cancels all other keys that are coded to that bike, apart from the one you are using obviously, so you need to redo your existing spare too, but it takes no time at all.

https://www.that auction site.co.uk/itm/234584841723 (sellers name: sharp-edged) was the guy I used. and some Danish guy on YouTube for the coding how to.

Just had the same experience. I took my two new blanks with my original to Timpson only to be told that "it is company policy NOT to cut keys on customer's own blanks". FKN ridiculous. I checked the FAQs on the Timpson website which states:

"All of our keys are quality checked to ensure you can rely on them unlike some available to buy online. To ensure you can leave us with a key that will work every time we suggest using our own blanks."

Note "suggest", not categoric refusal. I shan't be using Timpson for anything again. I'm now off to try a local car key specialist.

The Timpson's guy that cloned my VFR keys rode a bike too so he was OK. My keys were already cut to fit.

Today I had my two blanks cut by RKS (details below). They purport to be able to cut and program any key for any vehicle, though when I took my keys there he said that the NC750X was "not on their database". Whatever, he managed to cut my blanks to match the ignition key I gave him and they both work in the frunk lock and Honda OE topbox which is fitted.

He works mobile across East Anglia but has a base on the A140 on the entry to Long Stratton if coming in from the south towards Norwich. He is only there from 10-14.00 on Saturday, the rest of the time he works from his van.

Website is at https://remotekeyservices.co.uk/

He wasn't cheap though at £24.00 for the two keys on blanks which I supplied.
