I don't want to sound cheeky but someone may be able to help if you stated which engine you are working on.

I always thought that if you locked up all the connected components and just removed/replaced the chain without moving anything the timings stayed ok? Alternatively fed the new chain onto the old one and worked it through then everything stayed aligned?

Someone will be along in a while to point you to a YT video I expect.
