Steveg 1,031
Noticed my ignition key is getting a bit harder to turn , not sure if its ok to use a bit of WD40 as that's all Ive got in the garage at the moment or would something like 3in1 oil be better ? From a bit of googling some say wd40 is fine others say its not .... Cheers Steve Edited November 24, 2022 by Steveg Link to post
Steve T 1,342
GT85, as it leaves a very thin coating of PTFE on the locks internals, is my lube of choice. WD40 leaves a rather thicker layer of oil, which can prove attractive to dirt particles. Some say to use a graphite powder as dirt won't stick to it. Just my tuppence worth. Steve T 2 1 Link to post
DCTPaul 629
Not WD40... as mentioned for locks, padlocks etc. graphite powder on ya key... Or soft pencil lead... Edited November 24, 2022 by DCTPaul Link to post
listener 11,213
The problem with WD40 is that it collects dirt and graphite powder tends to clump. A light oil like 3-in-one or sewing machine oil is okay but a PTFE lube is best. Like ABUS padlock lube, push-bike chain lube or mo'bike chain lube. Steveg 1,031
Thanks for the replies found some GT85 which I sprayed key with and worked in / out etc Seems to have done the job Cheers Steve 3 Link to post
Iron horse 121
I found that a stiff ignition barrel was actually a slightly bent key. Lube would improve things for a bit and then I swapped to the other key. All sorted! Link to post
