Dunders 38
Hi, all, I can't remember what oil I put into the NC (2018 - not DCT) last time. It's me age, y'know. Does it matter if I had used semi and now put fully Synth (or vice versa) in? I'm not changing the filter. The problem with the amount of info on t'interweb about oil is that it leaves me utterly confused. I only used dino oil in my old Guzzi's! Thanks for any elucidation. Though I suspect more confusion is coming my way! Paul Link to post

Xactly 6,117
Erm, 10-30 is specified, I believe. Sorry. 1 Link to post

Andy m 27,490
10-W-30 on most Hondas now, not sure if/where the NC changed. Either way, just do what the manual says. I've had oil analysis done on two now and the results say Honda got it right. More frequent changes cause more wear, any oil you can trust to meet the spec works, anything higher wastes money. Happy to be corrected though.😇 The service manual says: RECOMMENDED ENGINE OIL: Honda "4-stroke motorcycle oil" or an equivalent motor oil. API classification: SG or higher JASO T 903 standard: MA Viscosity: SAE 10W-30 If only it specified semi- or fully-synthetic... It probably does in a language unknown to me <sigh> It'll get 10-40 like last time! P 1 Link to post
Slowboy 25,328
Fair enough, my old 700x from 2012 was 10w 40. I’m just so far behind the times these days 😂😂 2 Link to post
Xactly 6,117
Honda changed the oil viscosity recommendation a few years ago. Every manual Honda I've bought since 2019 (5) has specified 10/30. My friend's 2016 VFR800 has both, depending on ambient air temperature. I don't know about DCT versions as I've never owned one. The rest of the spec is probably more important though. 1 Link to post
Andy131 1,971
Don't forget it also says excluding oils marked as "Energy Conserving" or "Resource Conserving". 1 Link to post
usabikes 487
Yep, for the 2019 model the manual says: 10w-30 SG, JASO-MA irrespective if it's DCT or manual. For my 2022 the only change is SJ for SG. No it doesn't matter if you mix mineral with synthetic as long as they both have the same additive package (i.e. both SG for example). Link to post

alhendo1 3,442
I've had two 1st/600 mile services on my CB500x/Adv350 at the main Honda dealer and on both receipts it been 10w40 semi synthetic listed.....whatever is in the workshop drum I think....but if they're happy to document it then it must satisfy their warranty....both my manuals say 10w30 though. Enfield say 10w50 fully synthetic for the Interceptor although the main agent I know uses 10w40 fully synthetic...according to him its authorised by Royal Enfield. 1 Link to post
Dunders 38
I went to the local MotaWorld (VMCC discount...) and bought some 10W30. The only one on the shelf. I commented to the guy behind the counter that 10W30 was oddly difficult to source (locally) despite Honda specifying it for their bikes. He agreed. He buys his from the internet... P 1 Link to post
Dan German 2,513
Not sure if it’s different from the UK, but over here nearly every Honda since around 2007 has had a recommendation of GN4 10W30 or equivalent. That’s a mineral oil. It’s so common in Hondas that it’s the only Honda oil we carry in bulk for the shop. On some bikes, the manual may suggest different viscosities for different temperature ranges, but 10W30 is Honda’s go-to. 1 1 Link to post
poldark 2,212
I do wonder if the RE recommended 10W50 is because of the Indian climate, perhaps there should be a World viscosity map available. 2 Link to post
Xactly 6,117
Time was when you got an oil spec according to temperature ranges. As for RE I put the specified oil in mine. The Guzzi too - that was 10/60 IIRC. Why? Because they're air-cooled - it matters more because the tolerances cannot be as tight as a l/c motor because the temperatures are less stable. Given the 30 degree + we get these days I'd go for a "thicker" hot end viscosity. Interesting that the RE twin has an oil cooler.... 1 Link to post

Group 2 want the best for their darling precious and believe evil Mr. Honda is trying to poison it, believing instead that Castrol Super Duckhams GTR is not only full of hyper synthetic block chain stabilizers, but has that new fresh minty smell with added zing and zip. 40 being bigger than 30 proves they are correct. Group III bought or sold something labelled "Happy Dumpling Motorcycle Oil" and want to justify it either to avoid legal action or calm down the voices in their heads. No one will know the right answer until someone buys three identical motorcycles, uses them in identical ways and strips them down in 2038. Frankly no one should waste the time to care. If the clutch slips you chose unwisely. If it didn't the tenth owner might not get the bargain he expected from his 80000 mile bike. Oh dear, what a shame, never mind. Andy 1 3 Link to post
